Simultaneously, the frequency of offshore winds from the west through north-northwest increases dramatically, with ideal wind conditions occurring 48-55% of the time. Extratropical storms along the Antarctic Polar Front generate consistent, powerful swell trains, while the South Atlantic high-pressure system strengthens, funnelling clean westerly breezes across the coast. Fair Surf Season (March - April & September)

Shoulder months offer a blend of quality and quantity. March and April see solid swell heights (average 1.7m) and periods around 10s, with offshore wind percentages climbing from 25% to 35%. The swell direction remains dominantly from the east through south-southeast, hitting the optimal window. September still holds onto winter swell momentum, but the wind becomes less reliable as the season transitions. You'll find fun, rippable conditions, but you'll need to pick your windows carefully as onshore easterlies become more frequent.

Low Surf Season (October - February)

The summer months bring a stark contrast. From October to February, the average swell height holds at 1.6-1.8m, but the period drops to 8.7-9.4s, reflecting shorter-period, less powerful windswell. More importantly, offshore winds are scarce, occurring only 14-18% of the time. The predominant winds shift to the northeast through east-southeast—directly onshore—wrecking wave shape and creating choppy, messy conditions. The Indian Ocean high-pressure belt weakens, and thermal lows over the interior pull in humid, easterly flow. While a rogue long-period groundswell can still sneak through, the odds are stacked against clean, offshore surf. It's a time for groveling or waiting for the autumn transition.

November: Summer's Approach

November slides further into summer mode. Only 16% of the time are winds ideal for surfing. Onshore northeast (19.5%), east-northeast (11.8%), and east (4.5%) dominate the wind roses. South-southwest winds, which can also bring onshore flow, are common (19.6%). Average swell height is 1.7m, period 8.9s—short-period, punchy but often messy. Swell distribution: east (15.9%), east-southeast (13.1%), southeast (15.3%), south-southeast (17.8%), south (17.9%), and east-northeast (14.0%). The east-northeast input is now a significant player, meaning more windswell from the trade winds. Good surf is rare and usually comes from a passing cold front that briefly allows offshore winds. Expect small, groveling conditions most days; anything over head-high requires a special system.
