Best Surf Season (December - February)

Papenoo's north-facing reefs spring to life in December as the northern hemisphere autumn and winter low-pressure factory begins pumping long-period groundswell across the equator. The data shows the N-NNW-NW window rising to roughly 17-21 percent of all swell energy during these months, with additional northern-hemisphere pulses from the NNE and NE quadrants adding even more push. Average periods hold in the powerful 12-12.5s range, and any 15-19s groundswell that lines up can produce heavy, lined-up reef waves. The catch is the trade winds: easterly flow dominates, while true offshore S-SSW-SW wind only blows around 12-16 percent of the time. The best days come with predawn light winds, passing troughs, or when the South Pacific high drifts far enough south to let offshore flow set in.
