January: North Swell Peak and Trade Wind Tug-of-War

January is the heart of Papenoo's wet-season swell window. The average wave height is 1.6m (5-6ft) and the average period is a solid 12.4s, putting the North Pacific-generated swell firmly in the powerful long-period category. The swell rose is beautifully split: the N-NNW-NW window accounts for roughly 20 percent of the energy, with additional NNE and NE pulses filling out the northern half of the compass, while ENE and E trade-wind swell fills in the rest. This is the month most likely to serve up proper 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) sets on the outer reefs when a North Pacific low lines up its fetch.

Wind remains the main character flaw. The trades blow from E and ENE nearly 46 percent of the time, which is cross-shore and tends to chunk up otherwise clean lines. Ideal offshore flow from S-SSW-SW is rare, with ideal surf wind around 12 percent, so focus on early mornings, synoptic troughs, and the occasional tropical disturbance that backs the wind offshore. With air temperatures near 27°C and water temperature at 28.4°C, it rinses warm all month long.
