Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic pumps out consistent, powerful swell trains from October through March, driving average wave heights well above 2.4m and often exceeding 2.8m. During these months, offshore winds from the NE and ENE blow around 40-56% of the time, creating clean, groomed faces on the SW to W swell window. Long-period groundswells (10-14s average) dominate, and when a strong low-pressure system stalls off the coast, we see days of firing, hollow waves. This is prime time for The Wall, with the swell window fully exposed to the winter storm track.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September serve as transitional windows. April still holds an average swell height of 2.2m and 52% optimal wind, with SW-WSW swells packing a punch. September sees a slight uptick from summer lows with 1.9m average and a mix of lingering S/SSW swells. However, wind consistency drops below 50%, and periodic onshore flows can chop up the lineup. These months offer good sessions between fronts, but require timing.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

From May through August, the North Atlantic storm track retreats northward, and the average swell height plunges to 1.3-1.7m. Periods hover around 10 seconds, yielding weaker, less organized swell. The wind is ideal only 26-40% of the time, with frequent afternoon sea breezes from the W and WNW (onshore) ruining conditions. Small summer swells from the S and SW do arrive, but they are often short-period and fat. These months are best for fun-sized waves on a longboard when the rare glassy morning aligns.
