Llangennith

Stretching for three to five miles between towering dunes and flat, golden sand, Llangennith / Rhossili is a quintessential Welsh beachbreak that offers consistent, if not spectacular, surf. The lineup is a mixed bag of lefts and rights over shifting sand, producing waves that are generally fun and user-friendly but often lack the punch and definition that more powerful breaks deliver. At the northern end, Three Peaks stands out as the region’s most reliable source of size and power, catching more significant swell and providing a grittier ride. To the south, Rhossili offers a more mellow, forgiving wave as it picks up less energy. This spot is a reliable option for volume-minded intermediate surfers, but don’t expect the memorable, driving walls of a reef or point.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

From October through March, Llangennith shifts into full Atlantic mode. The North Atlantic storm track strengthens, and repeated low-pressure systems march toward the British Isles, firing long-period W, WSW and WNW swells into the Gower Peninsula. When the NAO is positive, this westerly conveyor is amplified even further, and the beach feels every pulse of the storm track. This is when the average wave height climbs to 4-5ft (1.2-1.6m) and periods regularly push into the 10s, with November, December, January and February producing the most powerful, organized groundswells. The caveat is the wind: a WSW-facing beach like Llangennith is at the mercy of the same west-to-east storm track, so onshore SW-W flow can turn things to mush. The best windows arrive when a cold front clears and high pressure builds from the east, producing offshore NE-ESE winds that groom the long sandbar walls. Water temperatures sit between 8-15°C, so a good hood and gloves are part of the deal, but the quality and consistency make this the clear prime season.
