Tucked inside Nawiliwili Bay, Kalapaki offers a forgiving beach break that peels gently over a mixed bottom of reef and sand, producing both lefts and rights. Ideal for beginners and longboarders, the wave maintains a mellow, user-friendly character, making it a perfect spot to learn or log smooth, cruisy rides. A surf school operates right on the sand, adding to the welcoming, low-stakes vibe.

Best Surf Season (May - September)

While the open-ocean waverose around Kauai is dominated by north-northwest energy during the winter half-year, Kalapaki's south-facing orientation flips the story. The most consistent shot at rideable surf arrives with the summer south-southeast swell window, when Southern Hemisphere groundswells and tropical disturbances push SE, SSE, S and SSW pulses into Nawiliwili Bay. Wave heights mostly run in the 3-5ft (1-1.5m) groveling-to-fun range, occasionally reaching 5-6.6ft (1.5-2m), with periods in the 9-10s range. Trade-wind flow is often cross-shore, but local wind statistics show a high percentage of ideal days, peaking at 47% in September. This is the time for a longboard.
