Best Surf Season (November - March)
Little Malibu's most reliable surf arrives through the late autumn and winter months, when the average swell height builds to a solid 5ft (1.5m) and the wave period hangs around the 10-second mark. This is the time when the Atlantic subtropical high tightens its grip, feeding a consistent stream of ENE and NE trade-wind swell across the island. While the beach faces southwest and would theoretically fire hardest on genuine SSW-W swells, those westerly windows remain extremely rare in the data. Instead, the NE-E quadrant dominates the wave rose, delivering punchy, rideable lines that still manage to wrap around the rocky structure and produce clean, rippable peaks. Add a steady offshore component from the N through E quadrant - which blows, on average, 63-64% of the time - and you have the best recipe for quality surf this spot offers.
Fair Surf Season (April - May, September - October)
As the trade winds ease slightly and the ocean transitions between seasonal regimes, surf quality at Little Malibu becomes a little more inconsistent. April and May still average 4ft (1.1-1.3m) of swell, but the period often drops into the 8.7-9.6s range, meaning less power down the line. September and October see a similar mix: the wave period climbs back to 9-10s, but the height stays around 4ft (1.1-1.2m). The wind, however, is your friend during these months - ideal offshore flow blows 69-78% of the time, and morning glass-offs are common. It's a great window for grovel-style surfing and longboarding, with plenty of peaky corners but fewer open-ocean, long-period sets.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the sleepy season at Little Malibu. The average swell height bottoms out at 3ft (1.0m) and the period decays to a marginal 6.7-7.3s, a byproduct of the warm-season pattern that parks high pressure over the western Atlantic and shuts down winter storm activity. What little energy does come in is caught up in short-period, local windswell, generally soft and unremarkable. The saving grace is the wind - ideal offshore conditions blow a whopping 85-87% of the time, so when a stray pulse of longer-period ENE groundswell sneaks in, the ocean surface is often glassy and well groomed. Even so, expect small, fun-sized waves rather than anything to get the heart pounding.
