Los Tubos, a northwest-facing reef/beach stretch along Puerto Rico's north coast, owes its best surf to the North Atlantic's winter engine. From November through March, cold fronts and strong high-pressure systems push trade-wind energy across the western Atlantic, producing average wave heights around 5.5-6ft (1.7-1.8m) and a much higher percentage of 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) surf than the rest of the year. The swell window is dominated by ENE and NE directions in the data, with a small but meaningful sprinkling of N and NNW swell; for this NW-facing exposure, the key is that the trade-wind swell is persistent and the wind stays mostly non-onshore.
