Margara sits right off the road in Arecibo, a classic right reef-and-point break that punches above its weight when the conditions align. The wave slides off the rock shelf with an A-frame takeoff, then bowls up for a solid 15 meters before exhaling into a longer, rippable wall that wraps into a small bay. But don't get too comfortable—this wave is notoriously wind-sensitive, and a shifting breeze can change the whole character in minutes. Swells range from 4 feet up to a serious 12 feet, with the magic coming from NE, ENE, E, ESE, and SE. Low to mid tide is the sweet spot, though mid to high can still produce, especially on smaller days. The bottom is all rock, feeding both rights and a handful of lefts, and this is no beginner playground—intermediate to expert only. On any day with real size, be ready to earn every wave with a paddling workout that will leave your shoulders talking. Crowds can get thick when the surf's on, and the local crew in Arecibo takes their waves seriously, so bring respect and your best surf manners. Margara shines brightest during late summer and fall when tropical swells roll through, but it also delivers consistent surf from late fall into early spring. Access couldn't be easier: there's a parking lot right across the street, so you can jump from car to water in seconds.

Best Surf Season (November - February)

Margara faces due north, and that simple fact dictates the whole surfing year. The winter months are hands down the most consistent for surf, as the North Atlantic cranks up and cold fronts push through the region with more frequency. Average wave heights climb to 5.5-6ft (1.7-1.8m) and average periods reach 6.5-7.0s, producing punchy, rideable waves instead of summer dribble. The catch is that the trade winds continue to blow from the E/ENE much of the time, so the best days are tied to S/SW offshore wind windows, which only show up about 30-37% of the time. When a winter low aligns with a southerly breeze, Margara can hold some of its best and most powerful surf of the year.
