The reef's irregular bottom makes for unpredictable sections, suiting intermediate to advanced surfers who can navigate a shifting lineup. When conditions align, the payoff is a long, hollow wave with a dramatic backdrop that few Alaska breaks can match.

Neva Bay is a cold-water Lake Superior standout, and the best surf of the year arrives between November and March. This is when the strongest extratropical systems sweep across the Great Lakes and generate long, powerful westerly swells across the open fetch. Average wave heights run 8-10ft (2.5-3.0m) with periods in the 11-12s range, and the swell direction is clustered in the favorable WSW, SW and W windows. The catch is that west winds also create the swell and can destroy the surface, so the magic sessions come after a cold front when high pressure takes over and offshore E/SE flow grooms a fading W/NW lake swell. Water temperatures around 5-8°C (41-46°F) demand thick rubber, but the payoff is legit midwinter surf.
