Low Island is a raw, uneven lava-rock reef that unfurls both lefts and rights across three distinct peaks, offering a versatile canvas for intermediate surfers craving uncrowded, unpolished waves. With its jagged bottom and multiple takeoff zones, the break rewards those who read the shifting lineup—expect hollow, fast, and sometimes tricky rides that demand sharp reflexes and a healthy respect for the reef. Quiet by design, it’s a sanctuary for surfers looking to escape the masses, where the trade winds and swell direction align to shape peaky, punchy walls best caught on a mid- to high-tide push.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

From October through March, Low Island sits squarely in the path of the North Pacific storm track. A strengthening Aleutian Low spawns a conveyor belt of extratropical cyclones, and the southwest-facing beach receives the full force of their WSW/SW groundswell. Average swell heights run 7.9-9.8ft (2.4-3.0m) with periods in the 10.4-11.8s range, so most days are powerful, heavy and often firing. The catch is the wind: the local wind rose is dominated by E/ESE/SE flow during winter, and only 26-36% of days are truly offshore from the N/NE/E quadrant. When high pressure builds over the continent and cold air pours out from the N/NE/E, Low Island can serve up hard, clean, long-period waves on a dramatic winter stage.
