April: Solid Spring Surf With a Cleaner Face

April marks the transition out of peak winter. Average wave height eases to 6.5ft (2.0m) and the period drops to 12.3s, still plenty powerful but with a little less punch than the dead of winter. WNW remains the dominant swell direction at exactly 50.0 percent of the total, while W adds another 21.2 percent and WSW increases to 5.8 percent, the best share of WSW observed so far in the year. The height distribution is still healthy, with the 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft) range being the main event, but there is less oversized energy above 8ft (2.5m).

Winds improve noticeably. Ideal offshore flow climbs to 70 percent, with NW at 24.7 percent and WNW at 23.3 percent making up the clean core of the wind rose. Rain becomes much less frequent at 1.27 mm/day, air temperatures warm to 12.0°C, and water temperature dips slightly to 11.5°C due to upwelling. Expect more mornings of nearshore glass and a proper spring-like buzz, with winter swells still sending through consistent shoulders.
