Rockaway Beach seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Rockaway Beach is a classic winter surf spot. As the North Atlantic storm track ramps up, extratropical cyclones and Nor'easters repeatedly fire along the East Coast and send consistent S, SSE and SSW swell into the SSE-facing sandbars. More importantly, the same weather pattern drags cold air out of Canada and pins the wind in the N/NNW/NW quadrant, which is exactly the offshore flow this exposed beach needs. With average swells holding near 1.3m (4.3ft) and ideal wind 26-29% of the time, this six-month stretch offers the most frequent combination of size, shape and clean surface.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
Spring and early fall occupy the middle ground. April and May keep the ocean alive with E/ESE/SE/S swell, but the wind becomes more mixed and the average size settles in the 1-1.2m (3.3-3.9ft) range. September is the standout shoulder month: tropical cyclones and early autumn low pressures stretch the average period to 8.3s and push ideal wind to 31%, although onshore S/SW days still interrupt the rhythm. These months can produce excellent waves, but they require more careful timing.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the slow season at Rockaway. The swell is dominated by short-period SSE/S/SE windswell, mostly in the 0.5-1m (1.5-3ft) range, and prevailing SSW/S/SW winds blow straight onshore after midday. While the water is warm and the beach is packed, surf quality is generally soft and ragged. Only tropical storms or late-summer hurricanes can briefly turn the low season into a serious swell event.
