Best Surf Season (November - February)

The winter months are when Salt Creek really earns its reputation. The North Pacific storm track ramps up, driving long-period groundswell from the W and WSW straight into the beach's west-southwest exposure. At the same time, high pressure over the Great Basin funnels offshore NE/ENE winds down the coast, producing the clean, groomed conditions this break is known for. Ideal offshore winds peak at 54% in both December and January, and the combination of 12s+ periods and consistent W/SW swell creates the most reliable and best-quality surf of the year.

Fair Surf Season (March - April and September - October)

Shoulder seasons offer a mixed bag. March and April often see the biggest average swell heights of the year - around 3.3ft (1m) with periods pushing 12.5-13.4s - but the afternoon sea breeze strengthens and offshore wind percentages drop to 30-36%. September and October are the reverse: smaller averages but a noticeable improvement in wind as the days shorten. These months reward the dawn-patrol surfer who can catch the clean morning windows between the westerly sea-breeze cycles.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer is the slow season at Salt Creek. The swell direction stays favorable - SSW through WSW - and the period remains surprisingly long thanks to Southern Hemisphere groundswell, but the average height shrinks to 2.6-3ft (0.8-0.9m), and ideal offshore wind plummets to 19-22%. The daily westerly sea breeze, driven by strong thermal gradients, routinely turns the surface bumpy by late morning. Surfable waves exist, but they require patience, a grovel board and an early alarm clock.
