Sealion Cove

Tucked away along a scenic stretch of coast, Sealion Cove offers a gentle, forgiving sandy beachbreak that’s ideal for beginners and those looking to log easy, low-stress rides. The wave breaks both left and right off a clean, sloping bottom, though the setup has a distinct preference for rights—especially when the swell has a hint of south in it. Best on a mid-to-high incoming tide with light offshore winds from the north or northwest, this cove provides a safe, playful environment to build confidence without the heavy crowds or hectic lineup of more advanced breaks. Expect soft, peeling shoulders that give you plenty of time to work on your technique, making it a perfect spot for longboarders and first-time foamie riders alike.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Pacific storm machine dictates the rhythm at Sealion Cove. From October through March, the Aleutian Low deepens and strong extratropical cyclones roll across the Gulf of Alaska, pushing average swell heights into the 2.5-3.0m (8-10ft) range with periods of 10.4-11.8s. Ideal offshore winds from E/ESE/SE/SSE blow 37-43% of the time in these months, so even in the dead of winter there are frequent windows of clean, lined-up surf. This is the time for big-wave chargers - cold water (5.3-6.6°C), heavy groundswell and raw, powerful conditions are the norm.
