Best Surf Season (October - March)

State's Avenue is an SSE-facing beach, so the surf year follows the North Atlantic storm track. From October through March, average swell heights stay in the 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) range and the wind climatology tilts strongly offshore. WNW and NW winds are consistently the most frequent directions, which is exactly what this beach needs to keep the surface clean. These months produce the most powerful and consistent swells, even if the averages hide plenty of punchy 6-9s windswell.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

April and May are transitional. The swell window shifts toward S/SSE/SE, which is good for wave direction, but the heights ease to 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) and onshore S/SW winds become more common. September is the strongest part of this season, with the average period jumping to 8.4s and tropical moisture adding late-season groundswell potential. It is a month that can deliver surprisingly good surf before winter really locks in.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

June through August is the slow season. The Bermuda High strengthens and pumps S/SW winds across the region, while average swell heights drop to around 3ft (0.9m). The swell direction is actually excellent - S, SSE and SE dominate the rose - but most of that energy is small and onshore winds tear up the surface. Early-morning landbreezes and the outer edges of tropical storms are the main hope for quality surf during summer.
