Best Surf Season (November - March)

The best surf of the year at Topanga unfolds from November through March, when the North Pacific storm track is most active and the average surf height hovers between 0.8-0.9m (2.6-3ft) with periods in the powerful 12-13s band. What sets this window apart is wind: ideal offshore conditions from the north through northwest are present 50-60% of the time, grooming the long-period WSW/SW swell into clean, rippable waves. December and January offer the highest consistency of offshore winds, while February and March bring some of the largest west and southwest swells of the year. With water temperatures around 14°C and air temps in the low teens, a hood and booties are the price of admission for the best waves of the season.

Fair Surf Season (April, September, October)

These shoulder months are a mixed bag. April still sees solid W/SW energy from late-season winter storms, with average heights around 0.9m (3ft) and periods near 12s, but ideal wind drops to 43% as the Pacific high builds and onshore flow increases. September and October represent the autumn transition: longer periods (12.6-12.9s) and more frequent NW/N winds boost quality, and October's 48% ideal-wind mark signals the return of winter. The ocean is still warm from summer and crowds linger, but the surf is becoming more consistent.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer at Topanga is the low season in terms of quality. From May through August, average heights are 0.8-0.9m (2.6-3ft) with long periods, but ideal winds plummet to just 19-27% as a persistent SW/WSW onshore flow, driven by the thermal low over the interior, kicks up bumpy and choppy conditions. Swell directions shift to SW and WSW, providing inconsistent and usually small waves. The famous south swells of California can still send some fun, long-period SSW/S swell into Topanga on the rare morning with light offshore winds, but they are the exception, not the rule. Water temps climb to 17°C and summer air is warm, yet the surf is mostly small and messy.
