Best Surf Season (November - March)

The period from November through March is Wishing Well's most reliable window for size and power. Average surf heights sit at 5-5.5ft (1.5-1.6m) with 10-second periods, and the winter North Atlantic storm track pushes persistent NNE through ENE swell into the islands. Cold-front pulses, low-pressure systems sweeping off the U.S. East Coast, and the Azores/Bermuda High combine to produce the most energetic, long-period groundswell of the year. Ideal surf wind is lower in these months, 39-49 percent, because the trade winds strengthen, but the direction remains offshore from the E/ENE quadrant. When the right cold front passes and the wind eases, Wishing Well can see punchy 5-8ft (1.5-2.4m) wrapping waves. December through February are the standouts, with March close behind.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

April is the fade-out of winter, and October is the re-boot. Both months average 4-4.5ft (1.2-1.3m) with 9.6-10 second periods, and both deliver higher percentages of clean, offshore wind - 54 percent ideal in April and 69 percent in October. NE/ENE swells are still dominant, but the waves are less consistent and less powerful than midwinter. October also benefits from early-season extratropical and tropical systems, while April is better for smaller, super-clean lined-up days on the inside.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

From May through September, Wishing Well drops into a classic summer trade-wind lull. Average heights slip to 3-4ft (1.0-1.2m), periods fall to 6.7-9.1 seconds, and the wave spectrum becomes dominated by short-period ENE/E trade wind swell. The good news is that ideal wind percentages are high, 51-68 percent, so conditions are often glassy. The bad news is that the swell lacks height, period, and the ideal west/northwest direction. Occasional tropical waves and hurricanes - especially from August through October - can inject a rare W/SW groundswell into the west-facing pocket, but as a general rule this is longboard and small-wave territory.
