The wind also aligns more favorably, with ideal offshore conditions (from NO, ONO, O, OSO) occurring 40-52% of the time. This is prime time for solid, hollow waves at the local reefs and beach breaks. The NAO index tends to be more negative or neutral, steering storm tracks southward toward Portugal – a classic recipe for pumping surf.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Transition months offer a mix of leftover winter energy and building summer patterns. April sees average swell heights drop to 1.8m with periods of 11.2s, while September bumps up to 1.4m and 10.6s. Swell directions shift more toward NW and WNW, still producing rideable waves, but the consistency is lower. Wind becomes more variable: ideal wind percentages fall to 29% in April and 30% in September. These months are a gamble – you might score a clean waist-high session, or you could be battling onshore breezes from a lingering summer regime.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer settles in with a dramatic drop in both swell size and reliability. Average heights hover around 1.3-1.5m, and periods shorten to 8.6-10.0s, resulting in weaker, mushier waves. The dominant swell direction shifts hard toward NW and even NNW, which are less favorable for this west-facing spot. Worse, the wind is ideal only 20-25% of the time, with persistent northwesterly winds (NNW, NW) that blow onshore and ruin the surface. Occasional small pulses from distant storms or local sea breezes can produce fun-sized, grovelly waves, but you'll be fighting crowds and soft conditions. This is the season to trade your step-up for a groveler or explore other hobbies.
