July: Midwinter Clean Lines

July mirrors June's quality: 49 percent ideal wind, 9.3s average period and a 4ft (1.2m) average swell. Winds are overwhelmingly from the west side of the compass - SSW 12 percent, SW 11 percent, WSW 8 percent, W 8 percent, WNW 12 percent, NW 10 percent and NNW 15 percent - making Moruya's offshore-onshore ratio as favorable as it gets all year. The bad NE-ENE-E-ESE wind sector is down to around 5 percent, so when waves arrive, they arrive clean. Swell direction is again southern-tilted: SSE, SE and S combine for around 50 percent, while the preferred ENE/E/ESE/NE sector still chips in about 38 percent. It is not a month of huge size - most wave heights sit between 2-3ft (0.5-1m) and 3-5ft (1-1.5m), with occasional 5-6ft (1.5-2m) sets - but it is consistently surfable, crisp and bank-friendly. Water temp drops to 15.6°C and air averages 10.2°C, so winter rubber is mandatory. With only 1.59 mm/day of rain, it is one of the driest months too.
