October: More Swell, Less Wind Luck

October sees a modest size bump to 4ft (1.2m), but the average period shortens to 8.2s and ideal wind drops to 27 percent. ENE is the dominant swell direction at 18 percent, with E at 14 percent, ESE at 13 percent and NE at 8 percent, so the breakwall's favorable east window is well represented. SSE swell (19 percent) still provides secondary energy. The wind record tells you it's spring: NNE 12 percent and NE 9 percent are building, while the westerly offshore sector falls to about 13 percent. The daily cycle of light morning westerly, then SE/NE seabreeze, becomes more pronounced. Rain increases to 2.25 mm/day and water temp rises to 16.6°C; air temps climb to 15.3°C. October sessions are often a race against the afternoon onshore bump, but the dawn windows can still pick up punchy, lined-up east swell from the first strong fronts of the new storm track.
