January: The Sea Breeze Struggle

Pennington Bay is not short on swell in January. The average wave height sits at 1.7m (5.6ft) with a long-period 11s southerly groundswell, and the data show a massive 41% of the energy coming from the SSW and another 24% from the SW. That leaves only a small slice of true southeast-to-south swell arriving from the optimal window, so much of this month's energy is off-axis and needs to wrap into the bay. The bigger issue is wind. The SE and SSE quadrants combine for over 43% of all reported winds, with another 11% straight from the south - squarely in the onshore, wave-ruining category. Ideal offshore wind arrives just 9% of the time, usually in the early morning before the summer seabreeze kicks up.

When a NNW or NW flow does align with the morning tide, the surf can be surprisingly clean and in the 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) range. But those windows are frustratingly rare. Water temperature holds at a warm 18.9°C, air temps average 19.0°C, and rainfall is low at 0.57mm/day, so the main problem in January is not cold or rain - it is finding a moment when the wind has not already destroyed the surface.
