The Southern Ocean storm track hits its peak in the heart of the Australian winter, and Rottnest Island feels the full force. Average swell heights climb to 8-9ft (2.5-2.7m) with periods in the 12.8-13.1s range, delivering powerful, well-organized groundswell from the SW and WSW. The subtropical ridge moves north, allowing more frontal systems to sweep through the bight, and the wind distribution tilts toward the offshore N, NE and NW quadrants much more often. Ideal surf conditions jump to 15-16% during these months - the highest of the year - and the island's south-facing breaks light up with heavy, hollow peaks and long-period energy.
