Supertubes is a world-class reef break that commands respect and delivers some of the most exhilarating, hollow waves you'll find. Nestled in a stunning coastal setting, this spot lives up to its name, churning out fast, critical right and left barrels that charge across a shallow, uneven reef. When conditions align, the lineup pulses with energy—locals and traveling chargers alike jostle for position, creating a competitive but electric vibe. The waves here are predominantly reef breaks that unload with raw speed and power. For the best shape, dial in an east wind and target low to mid tide. The optimal west swell direction allows it to wake up on small days, handling swells as small as 2ft (0.6 meters) with surprising punch, especially when a westerly component adds extra juice. But don’t be fooled—once it pushes toward double overhead, the reef gets shallow and unforgiving, turning this into a proving ground for experts only. The lefts, in particular, are a magnet for bodyboarders, thanks to how they pitch over the angular reef. On bigger days, prepare for a kneecap-deep shallow zone that demands sharp reflexes and solid reef-readiness. Supertubes is a classic canvas for surfers looking to showcase their skill, chase the tube, and earn every turn.

Best Surf Season (April - August)

Supertubes faces northwest, so it needs the Southern Ocean to do the heavy lifting. By April the transition begins: offshore flow reaches a yearly high of 29 percent, the average swell sits around 6.5ft (2.0m), and the average period stretches to 12.8s. Through May and June the averages climb to 7.5-8.5ft (2.3-2.6m) with periods around 12.9s, while WSW and W components become more prominent in the swell rose. July and August are the peak of winter, with average heights of 9ft (2.7-2.8m) and periods of 13.1-13.3s. Those long-period Southern Ocean groundswells are the real engine for the reef, but midwinter also brings a lot of W/NW onshore wind, so the best days are the windows with S/SSW/SW/WSW flow grooming the NW-facing break.
