January: Summer Trade-Wind Chop

January is dominated by the South Pacific High and a persistent NE/NNE trade-wind flow. The average swell height sits at around 5ft (1.6m) with a short, punchy period of 8.5s. The swell rose shows a favourable E/ESE/SE/SSE mix totalling nearly 59%, helped by another 18% from the ENE, so there is no shortage of waves. Most of the energy falls in the 3-5ft (1-1.5m) and 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) bands, with occasional 6.5-8ft (2-2.5m) sets from the SSE. The catch is the wind: only 19% of the time is ideal. NNE and NE winds combine for 26%, while S and SSE flows add another 24%, meaning many days are spent battling onshore or cross-shore breeze. The best chance for clean surf comes in the early morning with a light NW/NNW offshore before the sea breeze kicks in. Water temperature is a warm 22.4°C, air temperatures average 21.4°C (min 10.3°C, max 41.4°C), and rainfall averages 2.75 mm/day.
