July: Midwinter Consistency

July offers the highest percentage of ideal wind of the year at 38%, with an average period of 9.5s and average swell height of around 6ft (1.7m). The primary swell directions are SSE at 17%, S at 14% and SE at 12%, with SSW/SW again adding close to 11%. The dominant wave heights remain in the 3-5ft (1-1.5m) and 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) bands, but there is a solid undercurrent of bigger 6.5-8ft (2-2.5m) groundswell. The wind distribution is strongly westerly: W 15.8%, WSW 13.3%, WNW 9.1%, NW 7.3% and NNW 12.6%. This means that plenty of those winter S/SE swells are going to be blown offshore, making the island's banks hold up well. Watch for the strongest cold fronts, when W/SW winds can exceed 40km/h and turn the ocean into a washing machine; the days after a front are often the best. Water temperature remains cold at 17.6°C, air temperatures average 9.2°C (min 0.1°C, max 22.5°C), and July is dry with only 1.81 mm/day of rain.
