Just across the island, Sharkies lures the same big-wave adrenaline junkies—and yes, keep an eye out for the local apex predators. The surf year at Windang Island is a battle between Pacific trade windswell and Southern Ocean groundswell. Because the beach is exposed to the east-southeast, it needs E/ESE/SE/SSE swell to light up. Clean conditions require W/WNW/NW/NNW offshore flow, and the seasonal migration of the South Pacific High dictates how often those two ingredients line up. From late autumn into winter, the westerly wind belts move north over NSW and the surf becomes distinctly more reliable; through summer, the trade winds and NE seabreezes keep the potential but make consistency harder to find.

Best Surf Season (April - August)

From April through August, Windang Island gets its most consistent combination of favourable swell direction and offshore wind. The percentage of ideal surfing winds climbs from 25% in March to 33% in April and then stays in the 35-38% range through August. Average swell periods peak at 9.4-9.7s, which is enough period to make the E/ESE/SE/SSE groundswell punchy and powerful. Southern Ocean lows and Tasman Sea cut-offs fire S/SE groundswell at the island, while the seasonal westerly belts supply frequent W/WNW/NW/NNW offshores. This is the most reliable window for clean, hollow surf.
