Best Surf Season (May - August)

The winter months mark the heart of the surf year at Black Rock. As the Southern Ocean storm track shifts north and mid-latitude cyclones march east between 45°S and 55°S, the southwest-facing beach finally sees a meaningful slice of SSW, SW, WSW and W groundswell. Average wave periods climb to 9.0-9.5 seconds, and the most consistent swell of the year - often in the 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) range with 8ft (2.5m) plus days on the table - arrives on a regular basis. The catch? The same storms that generate that swell also drag westerly and southwesterly winds across the coast, so Black Rock is frequently onshore and bumpy. The best sessions come in the wake of fronts, when a large high-pressure ridge builds east and the wind swings into the northeast and east, leaving behind clean, powerful lines.
