The magic happens when swells roll in from the east, particularly the northeast or southeast, with the reef handling waves up to a solid 6 feet (1.8 meters). Expect fast, hollow lefts breaking over an uneven reef bottom, offering a challenging, technical ride that rewards precision and experience. Ideal conditions align with a west wind, and the break works across all tides, though timing your session to the tide’s rhythm can make all the difference. Best Surf Season (April - August)

For an east-facing reef like Golf Course Reef, the key is not just raw swell size but direction and wind. The autumn and winter months bring the most consistent offshore conditions, with SW, WSW, W and WNW winds blowing across the break 50-60% of the time from April through August. Average wave heights sit around 6ft (1.8-1.9m) and average periods climb to 9.0-9.5s, giving the waves more push and shape. Swell directions shift a little south of the ideal NE/E quadrant during winter, but the long, clean Southern Ocean groundswell and regular westerly offshore flow make this the most dependable window for quality surf at the reef.
