Best Surf Season (May - September)

Winter takes hold of the Tasman Sea, and Avalon hits its stride. The combination of strong low-pressure systems tracking across the Southern Ocean and a well-established subtropical ridge funnels consistent, long-period swell from the E through SSE quadrants into the beach. Average wave periods climb to 9.5s during the heart of winter, delivering powerful, lined-up waves that wrap into the bay. Offshore winds from the W, WNW, NW, and NNW become more frequent, with ideal wind percentages peaking at 42% in July. This is the prime window for clean, rippable surf with waves in the 1-2m range, often pushing into pumping territory. During these months, the beach can fire with groomed walls and the occasional heavy barrel when the swell direction lines up.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

Spring and autumn act as transitional periods for Avalon. In April, the Tasman is still active from the tail end of winter, and average swell height holds at a solid 1.4m with a period of 9.2s. The onshore wind flow from the NE and E begins to relax, and offshore breezes blow about 34% of the time, offering good sessions between fronts. October sees the surf start to pick up again after the slow summer months, with similar swell heights but slightly shorter periods (8.5s). The trade-off is more variability: you might score a fun, glassy morning before the sea breeze kicks in, or a pulsing E groundswell with clean conditions if a high parks itself over the Bight. Both months are solid, but inconsistent – you need to pick your windows wisely.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

Summer and early autumn are the quietest time for Avalon. The south-east-facing beach misses most of the tropical cyclone swell that impacts northern NSW, and the dominating synoptic pattern features a persistent ridge that pumps onshore E to SE winds. Ideal offshore wind from the W to NW flows only 21-27% of the time, and even when the wind co-operates, swell periods hover around 8-9s, producing weak, short-period waves that rarely break with any power. December through February are particularly flat, with average heights dropping to 1.3m and most waves falling into the small, groveling category. While a stray E groundswell can sneak in and offer a fun session, the overall quality is low. If you're chasing waves during these months, best to keep expectations in check and wait for a southerly buster to clean things up.
