January sits at the heart of the winter windswell season on Nottawasaga Bay. The dominant wave direction is overwhelmingly NNW, with over 17% of all wave trains coming from that quadrant and another 20% from W, WNW and NW combined. This northwest fetch is the longest over Georgian Bay and produces the largest waves of the year, but it comes with a catch: the wind is almost always blowing from the same direction, and the average period is only 4.0s. This is pure, chaotic, wind-driven chop rather than organized swell. Average wave height is 0.7m (2.5ft), with the bulk of the northwest energy running in the 0.5-1m (1.5-3ft) range and the occasional 1.5-2m (5-6.5ft) set when an Alberta clipper rips through.

In terms of wind, onshore W/WNW/NW/NNW flow dominates 39% of the time, while offshore E/ESE/SE/SSE winds are present 21% of the time but only align with rideable waves 4% of the time. These ultra-rare clean windows are usually tied to the cold, dry high pressure behind a fresh front. Air temperatures average -6.6°C with precipitation around 1.66 mm/day, and water temps sit near 0°C (32°F). If you can handle the ice and the bitter cold, January can occasionally surprise; just know that 4.0s period means you will be surfing chop, not groomed swell.
