June: Summer Flat and Fickle Shoreline Breezes

The summer doldrums settle over Nottawasaga Bay in June. Average wave height ties May at 0.2m (0.6ft), and the period is the lowest of the entire year at 2.8s - essentially nil organized energy. The dominant wave directions are still from the northwest (NNW 17.1%, WNW 16.4%, NW 15.3%), but more than 95% of all readings are under 0.5m (1.5ft). These micro waves are generated by lake breezes and passing thunderstorms, never by strong synoptic systems. The surf quality is negligible; it takes a proper squall line to produce any 1m+ (3ft+) waves, and then only for an hour.

Wind patterns continue to be dominated by onshore W/WNW/NW/NNW flow around 51% of the time. Offshore E/ESE/SE/SSE winds are present only 17% of the time, and the ideal surfing percentage drops to 0%. Air temperatures of 16.8°C and water temperatures rising quickly into the mid-teens - 14-18°C (57-64°F) - mean the beach is comfortable, but the lake is flat. Precipitation is at its annual peak near 2.28 mm/day. Summer surfers should chase any frontal passage with a strong NW fetch, but more often than not, June is a skimboard month.
