February: Peak Summer Warmth

February is essentially January's twin in the South Pacific wave climatology, with WSW swell still owning 73 percent of the energy budget and SW adding another 17 percent. The W window contributes just under 10 percent, and once again there is no detectable N or NW swell. That leaves Punta de Lobos completely dependent on long-period southwestern groundswell wrapping into its north-northwest-facing pocket, trading raw winter power for consistency and shape.

The numbers are remarkably stable: average height 5ft (1.6m), average period 12.8s, and a wave-height distribution that peaks solidly in the 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) range at 53 percent of observations. The ocean reaches its warmest mark of the year at 14.1°C (57°F), while the atmosphere averages a pleasant 18.5°C (65°F). Wind-wise, offshore SW and SSW flow dominates at 33.6 and 19.1 percent of the time respectively, keeping surfaces clean during the 62 percent of the month that qualifies as ideal surfing wind. The occasional N/NNW onshore push totals about 14 percent, but it rarely exceeds 10-20km/h. It is the best month for a lighter wetsuit, surfing punchy summer peaks with dependable 12.8-second runner waves under sunny skies.
