December: Trade Windswell and Short-Period Grind

December closes the year in classic dry-season mode. The average swell period collapses back to 8.9s, and the swell rose is once again dominated by ENE (40.1%) and NE (22.9%) windswell. Much of that energy is in the 3-6.5ft (1-2m) range, with 28.7 percent of all swell arriving from ENE at 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) and 9.8 percent at 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m). The problem is direction and period: ENE/NE windswell is not the ideal S/SSW/SW window for this SSW-facing point, and 8.9s average period just can't produce the powerful, lined-up waves that long-period groundswell can. The winds are fully back to trade-wind strength - NE blows 74.3 percent of the time, with a huge chunk at 20-40kph - so ideal surfing conditions drop to just 34 percent. Favorable SSW and SW swell total only 5.2 and 3.2 percent, and it's mostly small. Still, the dry, warm weather (air 25.7°C, water 27.0°C, 0.37 mm/day rain) makes it a beautiful place to be, and the rare clean window on a long-period S/SW pulse can offer a surprising session.
