March: The Last Reliable Push of North Swell

March begins the transition from winter to the Caribbean trade-wind regime, yet the North Atlantic still sends enough frontal systems toward the subtropics to keep a glimmer of hope alive. Optimal N, NNW and NW swell accounts for roughly 11% of the spectrum, with the majority arriving in the 1.6-3.3ft (0.5-1m) size range. The average wave height remains 2.3ft (0.7m) and the average period sits at 3.3s, so expect mostly short-period, low-energy windswell. ENE and E swells combine for about 59% of the spectrum, and winds follow the same path: E/ENE totals around 48%, with a big cluster in the 20-40kph band. That persistent cross-onshore flow is the main reason Cayo Coco rarely looks clean in March. Cold fronts still offer the occasional S/SW offshore wind, but the ideal-wind frequency is only 2%. Air temperatures are warming to 24.7°C and water 25.3°C, and rainfall starts to edge up to 0.99mm/day, but the north shore can still deliver a few fun half-day sessions immediately behind the strongest fronts.
