Today's Surf Conditions at Cote des Basques
Spot Overview & Description
Côte des Basques is not just a beachbreak—it's the birthplace of French surfing, a storied stretch of sand where the country’s wave-riding legacy began. The setup delivers peeling lefts and rights over a forgiving, sandy bottom, with mellow, rolling walls that are tailor-made for longboarders, beginners, and surf schools, as well as laid-back holiday sessions under the summer sun. The lineup typically features a wedge-like peak hugging the headland and a second, more defined peak a bit farther down the beach. A scattering of offshore islands works to filter and groom the incoming swell, lending a touch of organization to the often playful, punch-less waves. While it’s predominantly a summer playground, the spot’s orientation keeps it rideable even when afternoon sea breezes kick in, offering a forgiving, crowd-friendly alternative to more demanding breaks nearby.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic wakes up properly by October, and Cote des Basques turns from a sleepy summer beach into a consistent, powerful surf spot. From October through March the average swell height hovers between 4ft and 6ft (1.3m and 1.8m) and the average period stays above 11 seconds, peaking at 13.0 seconds in January. These are long-period, open-ocean groundswells generated by strong extratropical lows racing across the Atlantic. With the beach facing west-north-west, the dominant WNW and NW swells have an almost unobstructed run into the bay. Statistically, the ideal wind window rises to between 40 and 46 percent during these months, giving surfers a much better chance of finding clean, groomed conditions. This is the heart of the Basque surf season.
