The North Atlantic switches on during this window and Galiote sees its most consistent combination of favourable NE-ENE-E-ESE swell and offshore SW-WNW winds. Average wave heights climb to 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) from November through January, and the ENE and E swell sectors are at their most frequent. Low pressure systems marching across the Atlantic and into the Bay of Biscay feed longer-period groundswell into the coast, while the west-based offshore wind flow polishes the surface. Positive NAO phases can tighten the storm track and produce repeated windows of clean, punchy 3-6ft (1-2m) surf at the peak of winter.
