Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (November - March)
During the winter months, the North Atlantic cranks up its fury, sending consistent swell trains that push into the 1.5m to 1.6m range with average periods around 10 seconds. While the dominant swell direction remains from the NE-ENE quadrant — far from ideal for this WSW-facing beach — the combination of larger, longer-period groundswell and frequent offshore winds from the E-ENE sets the stage for the most rideable surf of the year. Be ready for punchy, often hollow waves when the wind lines up just right, but don't expect the classic SW groundswell that would truly light up the lineup.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September - October)
The shoulder months offer a moderate blend of conditions. Swell heights drop to 1.1-1.3m and periods hover around 9-10 seconds, still predominantly from the NE. With wind ideal surf time increasing to 54-67% of the month, these periods yield cleaner, more consistent sessions, though the lack of quality swell direction keeps the waves from reaching their true potential. Smaller days mix in with occasional fun-sized runners when an easterly fetch aligns.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer slumps hard at Gas Chambers. Average swell heights bottom out at 1.0m with periods shortening to 6-7 seconds, resulting in weak, short-period windswell from the E-ENE. The ocean becomes a lake of small, mushy waves — mostly unrideable unless you are on a foam board. The wind does blow offshore often (over 50% of the time), but the energy is simply not there. Only the rare passing tropical system might throw a bone, but overall it is the true off-season.
