The North Atlantic stirs from its summer slumber and Baltrum's sandbanks start to feel the pulse of powerful, long-period groundswell. From late autumn through early spring, the Icelandic Low strengthens and the resulting pressure gradient sends a relentless train of extratropical cyclones across the North Sea. This is when the average swell height climbs to 1.4-1.7m (4.5-5.5ft), and while the period can be chopped up by local wind, the sheer consistency of energy ensures there is almost always something to ride. The trade-off? The North Sea is a fickle, wind-whipped beast - the same low-pressure systems that generate the swell also drag onshore winds across the German Bight, so the 'ideal wind' window (S to SW) stays locked at a mere 12-15%. Yet when the high pressure builds over Scandinavia and the wind swings offshore, the NW-NNW groundswell wraps onto the beach with a clean, hollow punch - those are the days that make the winter misery worth every frozen ear.
