Best Surf Season (October - March)

Spiekeroog is a fickle, sandbar-dependent North Sea spot, but the months from October through March are its most consistent window. During this period, the average swell height sits between 1.2-1.6m (4-5ft) and the average period stays in the 6-6.5s range, so the beach is feeding on short-period windswell generated by passing low-pressure systems rather than long-distance groundswell. The direction data show that swell from W, WNW, NW and NNW is most frequent, with a valuable contribution from the good NNW-N-NE quadrant. Strong offshore winds from the SSE, S, SSW and SW are common from autumn through winter, which is key: when the North Sea is stacked and the wind is offshore, the north-facing sandbanks of Spiekeroog line up into clean, punchy, rippable waves. This is the time to chase the biggest swells and the cleanest windows. The NAO also plays a role here; when it trends positive, the storm track funnels more lows into the North Sea, while a negative NAO can leave the island flat for a week or more.
