Best Surf Season (November - February)

The Mediterranean winter is the engine room for Vouliagmeni. As cold fronts and Genoa lows traverse the basin, the south-facing shoreline of the Saronic Gulf receives the most consistent SSW-to-SSE swell of the year. The statistics show average wave heights peaking around 0.9m (3ft) through December and January, with the favourable S/SSW/SSE/SE sector still producing a healthy share of 1-1.5m (3-5ft) waves and occasional 2m-plus sets. Winds blow from the offshore N/NNE/NW/NNW quadrant roughly half the time, so the setup is far better than the rest of the year. Still, the average wave period hovers around just 5s, so quality is often short-period and lumpy; the classic Vouliagmeni day comes when a deep low in the Ionian or Libyan Sea sends 8-10s SSW swell while a crisp northerly keeps the surface clean.
