Tucked away on the southern tip of Santa Marinella, Il Bunker is a hidden gem that rewards those who seek it out. Invisible from the main road, this secluded reef break can be accessed from the pier just north of the wave, and its relative obscurity means you’ll often have the lineup to yourself. The setting itself is a standout: a powerful right-hander unloads over a shallow reef, with a weathered WWII bunker watching over the scene, lending a gritty, historic vibe to the session. This spot comes alive under a solid northwest swell, which sends in the most consistent and well-shaped waves. It can handle swell heights starting around 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can also produce lefts when conditions align. The best winds blow from the northeast, cleaning up the faces, while the wave works across low, mid, and high tides—offering flexibility for timing your session. A southwest swell can also deliver, but it’s the northwest that truly unlocks its potential. Given the shallow reef and powerful punch, Il Bunker is best suited for intermediate surfers who are comfortable with fast, critical drops and a rocky bottom. Best Surf Season (November - March)

The Mediterranean is not the North Atlantic, but the winter months still bring the most consistent surf to Il Bunker. Between November and March, the subtropical jet and Atlantic storm track push frontal systems across southern Europe, and the Gulf of Genoa becomes a breeding ground for secondary cyclones. The result is a steady feed of short-period swell from the S/SSW/SW quadrant, with average wave heights peaking at 3ft (1.0m) in December and hovering around 2.5-3ft (0.8-0.9m) through the rest of the winter. Long-period groundswell is rare - average periods sit near 5s - but the wave quality is punchy and rideable, especially when NNE/NE offshore winds, present 18-20% of the time, groom the SSW-facing shore. Negative NAO winters in particular tend to increase the number of Mediterranean lows, injecting more energy into what is otherwise a fetch-restricted sea. If you want the best chance of clean, rippable surf at Il Bunker, this is the window.
