Kapu Beach Lighthouse presents a classic blend of novelty and consistency, anchored by a short, shallow right that peels off the lighthouse itself—a playful little gem that rewards good timing. Beyond this focal point, the shoreline unfurls for miles as a dynamic beachbreak, offering average but rideable waves in both directions. For those willing to scout a bit south toward Kerala, conditions often improve noticeably, with increased consistency and size as the seabed shifts. The primary swell window is west, though the setup also handles southwest and northwest pulses well, with an ideal size around 3 feet. Wave faces break over a mix of boulders and sand, delivering right-handers best suited for intermediate surfers. Optimal conditions align with low to mid tide and a north-east wind that grooms the surface. While the surf here can be decent, it’s prone to mediocrity—so checking the latest forecasts before paddling out is key to catching Kapu at its best.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The post-monsoon and winter months deliver the most consistent surf at Kapu Beach, thanks to a shift in the regional pressure gradient that funnels cool, dry continental air over the Arabian Sea. Offshore winds blow from the NE to ESE quadrants between 43% and 58% of the time, grooming the most frequently occurring swell from the WSW, W, and WNW. Wave heights average 0.7–0.9m, with periods climbing to 10–11 seconds – offering clean, punchy, rideable lines perfect for groveling and small-wave performance. Occasional pulses of longer-period groundswell from distant mid-latitude storms can push into the 1–1.5m fun range, especially in October and November, when the tropical cyclone season also adds energy. Light winds and sunny skies often accompany these swells, making it the prime window for Kapu.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

As the monsoon trough begins to flex in April, the percentage of offshore wind drops to 26% and the swell mix becomes dominated by S through WSW directions. Average wave heights rise to 0.9–1.1m, with longer periods (10–10.8s) indicating more distant swell sources, but the window of clean conditions narrows. Morning sessions often reap the benefit of light E to ESE breezes before the sea breeze kicks in from the W and WSW. September sees the southwest monsoon retreat, increasing offshore wind frequency to 24% and offering a mix of powerful WSW and W swell from the tail end of the Indian Ocean storm track. These transitional months can reward patient surfers with overlooked quality.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

The southwest monsoon grips the Indian west coast from June through August, bringing relentless onshore winds from the SW, WSW, and W that blow 89–95% of the time. While average swell heights surge dramatically to 1.9–2.3m with periods around 10 seconds, the wave quality is heavily compromised. Most of the energy arrives as powerful, short-period windswell generated directly over the Arabian Sea, creating choppy, lumpy, and often unsurfable conditions. The rare window of calm occurs during brief breaks in the monsoon flow, but overall, this is a time to leave Kapu to the offshore storms and explore other coastlines.
