Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (November - February)

The winter months deliver the most consistent combination of favourable winds and rideable swell for Shivas. As the Indian winter monsoon sets in, a stable high-pressure system over the subcontinent funnels cool, offshore winds from the NNE and ENE across the coast, creating clean conditions over 60% of the time. While the dominant swell direction shifts toward the W and WNW – not optimal but still capable of wrapping into the bay – the average wave height hovers around 0.8-0.9m with a punchy period of 9-10s. These are the months to point your board south-west and enjoy glassy, fun-sized waves before the afternoon sea breeze kicks in.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

Transitional periods bring a trade-off. In March and April, the offshore wind window narrows to about 30-42%, but the swell direction swings more favourably toward the SW and WSW, producing consistent 1m waves with a longer, more powerful 10-11s period. Similarly, September and October see the tail end of the summer swell and the onset of the northeast monsoon, with ideal wind percentages climbing back to 40% while the swell remains solid and well-directed from the SSW and SW. These months can dish out excellent sessions when the synoptic setup aligns, but you’ll need to pick your windows carefully.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Shivas essentially goes dormant during the peak of the Indian summer. From May through August, the dominant southwest monsoon winds blow directly onshore from the W and WSW, ruining wave quality and making the ocean a bumpy, choppy mess. Average wave height actually peaks at a heavy 2.3-2.5m in June and July, but it comes with onshore winds over 90% of the time and a short, windswell-like period around 10s. Unless you enjoy closeouts and whitewash, it’s best to leave the board at home and wait for the monsoon to retreat.
