Best Surf Season (October - March)

The Indian winter transforms Ten Thousand Peaks into a prime destination. From October through March, the southwest Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean send consistent SW to WNW swell in the 0.7-0.9m range, with average periods climbing from 9.2s to a juicy 11.2s. The real magic, however, lies in the wind: a dominant easterly-to-northeasterly flow (ENE, E, ESE) kicks in over 48-63% of the time, providing clean, offshore conditions that groom the waves into lined-up, punchy walls. High pressure over the Indian subcontinent strengthens the land breeze, while the absence of strong tropical cyclones keeps the water quality high. This is the window for classic, rippable surf.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

As the monsoon transition begins, reliability drops. April and May see swell heights climb to 0.8-1.1m with periods around 10.4-10.6s, thanks to early tropical storms and lingering Southern Ocean pulses. However, offshore wind frequency falls to just 12-21%, as the spring flow turns more westerly (W, WNW), creating bumpy, choppy conditions on many days. September offers a sneak peek of the winter pattern: swell averages 1.3m with 9.3s period, and offshore winds return 20% of the time. Early morning windows can still produce fun, clean surf, but afternoons often degrade.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

The southwest monsoon unleashes its full fury from June to August. Swell heights rocket to 1.9-2.3m with powerful periods of 9.8-10.5s, driven by relentless tropical cyclones and monsoon lows in the Arabian Sea. The predominant W and WSW swell is huge and occasionally lined up, but the trade-off is brutal: offshore wind plummets to a mere 2-9%. The prevailing wind runs from the WSW to WNW (onshore), shredding wave faces into a messy, blown-out chaos. Only the most sheltered pockets might offer scattered rides during brief wind shifts. This is a time for charging when the wind lies down, but patience is a virtue.
