Best Surf Season (May - August)

The Southern Hemisphere winter unleashes its full fury on the Cape coastline, and Kleinmond reaps the rewards. From May through August, the 'Roaring Forties' low-pressure systems march relentlessly across the South Atlantic, generating a steady diet of powerful, long-period SW to SSW swell. Average heights climb to a solid, pumping 2.8m with periods often exceeding 12 seconds – think powerful, heavy lines that stand up tall on the south-facing beach. Critically, this period coincides with peak offshore wind frequency from the NW and NNW quadrants, offering clean, groomed faces more than 45% of the time. For the dedicated surfer, this is the holy grail.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional months offer a sweet spot between the peak winter energy and the lighter summer conditions. April sees the tail end of strong SW swells averaging 2.3m with long periods, while September marks the start of the wind shift. During these months, the wind is ideal about 33% of the time, with a mix of offshore NW winds and building onshore SE patterns. Swell quality remains high, but consistency drops slightly. You can score incredible sessions between frontal passages – often glassy, lined-up waves with lighter crowds than the peak winter months.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

The summer half-year is a challenging period for Kleinmond surfers. The South Atlantic storm track shifts poleward, reducing swell frequency and power. Average heights hover around 2.1m and periods dip to 11 seconds – still rideable, but less consistent. More problematic is the wind regime: a persistent high-pressure cell over the interior drives dominant SE to ESE winds (onshore, sideshore) that chop up the waves and create a daily sea breeze cycle. Offshore winds from the north are rare, occurring only 12-22% of the time. While occasional cold fronts can still deliver brief pulses of good swell, the overall pattern is small, wind-affected surf. For the patient, there are still windows – early mornings with light NW winds can yield clean, fun-size waves before the onshore kicks in.
