Best Surf Season (May - August)

Winter in the Southern Hemisphere brings the South Atlantic to life, and Strand reaps the rewards. From May through August, the average swell height climbs to 2.5-2.8m with long periods of 12.3-12.5s, fed by a relentless train of extratropical storms roaring through the 'Roaring Forties'. The dominant swell directions – SW and SSW – align perfectly with Strand's southwest-facing orientation, delivering powerful, rippable waves. At the same time, the wind regime shifts favorably: high-pressure systems nudge over the interior, dialing in steady offshore breezes from the NNE through E quadrant. During these months, the wind is ideal for surfing over 55% of the time, often producing clean, lined-up surf that holds size. This is the pinnacle of the year for consistent, quality waves at Strand.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September serve as transition months between the peak winter swell and the calmer summer. In April, average swell height remains solid at 2.3m with a 12.0s period, and the wind goes offshore 44% of the time – a solid chance for clean surf. September sees slightly larger average swell at 2.6m, though the period drops to 11.9s and the offshore wind window narrows to 39%. These months offer plenty of rideable surf, but the consistency and quality are more variable as the storm track wavers and wind patterns become less reliable. Expect good days interspersed with periods of onshore SW wind that chop up the lines.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

From October through March, summer dominates Strand. The swell source weakens as the South Atlantic storm track shifts southward; average heights hover between 2.1-2.3m with periods of 11.1-11.4s – still fun, but less powerful. The bigger issue is the wind: the percentage of ideal offshore wind plummets to between 19-30%. Instead, the prevailing seabreeze pattern often builds onshore flow from the SW and W during the afternoon, ruining the wave quality. While early mornings can offer brief windows of clean conditions, the majority of the time the surf is bumpy, choppy, and less consistent. This is the time to be selective and chase the early light, or the occasional cold front that stalls a shallow low offshore.
