Best Surf Season (November - March)

The heart of the winter surf season delivers an almost perfect combination of consistent groundswell and reliable offshore flow along the South Pacific coast of Mexico.

From November through March, a semi-permanent high-pressure system over the southwestern United States funnels steady, offshore winds from the N and NNE onto La Lancha's SSW-facing beach.

Though the dominant swell origin shifts to the W and WNW—generated by intense North Pacific extratropical storms—the long-period nature (13.5-13.6s average) allows these waves to wrap effectively into the bay, producing clean, rippable lines.

With average wave heights hovering around 1.0m and ideal wind percentages consistently above 85%, this window offers the highest probability of smooth, groomed waves suitable for all levels.

Fair Surf Season (October, April & May)

As the seasons transition, the swell direction rotates towards the S and SW quadrants—bringing more direct swell at La Lancha—while the wind patterns become somewhat more variable.

October sees the start of the good winter setup with 80% ideal wind, but the tropical influence remains, occasionally introducing humid southerly breezes.

April and May maintain a strong percentage of offshore days (85% and 79% respectively) and the swell averages a healthy 1.0-1.1m in height.

The wave energy is often a mix of remnant winter groundswell and early spring NW swell, so you'll find fun, punchy surf, though with a slightly lower consistency compared to the peak months.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

The summer months are defined by the dominance of the North Pacific subtropical high and the onset of the Eastern Pacific tropical cyclone season.

While the predominant swell shifts to the SSW and SW (optimal angles for the spot), the wind becomes much less reliable, with ideal offshore conditions occurring only 63-73% of the time.

Southerly and south-westerly breezes, often associated with afternoon sea breezes or nearby tropical storms, can degrade wave quality.

The average wave height hovers around 1.0m, but periods remain a decent 13-14s, so when the wind does align from the NE or N, the results can be surprisingly clean, though overall consistency is lower.

Hawaiian-style summer swells from the Southern Hemisphere rarely reach here, so patience is key during these months.
