Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

This is prime time for Nuevo Vallarta. The North Pacific roars to life, sending consistent, long-period swell from the W and WNW that wraps nicely into the Banderas Bay. With average wave heights hovering around 1.0-1.1m and periods often exceeding 13 seconds, you get powerful, rideable waves. The real gem is the wind: high pressure over the mainland ushers in light, offshore breezes from the N through E quadrants, grooming the faces perfectly. Ideal wind percentages peak at 70% in December, making for clean, organized conditions more often than not.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, & September)

As spring settles in, the atmosphere shifts. The North Pacific storm track weakens, leading to smaller average swell heights and a transition toward more southerly swell sources. April still delivers solid W and WSW swell with good period, but ideal wind drops to 49%. May sees a further drop in offshore wind frequency to 39%, and waves become more inconsistent, though occasional SW pulses from distant storms can still bring fun, rippable waves. September marks the tail end of summer; tropical activity in the East Pacific can spawn long-period SSW and SW swell, but the wind window is tighter, with onshore afternoon breezes becoming a factor.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest stretch for Nuevo Vallarta. Swell sources pivot almost entirely to the SSW and SW, with average heights slipping to 0.9m. While periods remain decent (13-14s), the waves are often too small and weak for a good session. The bigger issue is the wind: a weak offshore flow in the early hours gives way to increasing onshore westerlies as the day heats up, and ideal wind conditions plummet to a low of 32% in June. You'll find the occasional punchy wave from a passing tropical wave or distant storm, but consistency is low and the crowds spread thin. Best to wait for autumn's return.
