Nestled across the rivermouth from Lagos, Meia Praia stretches out as a long, crescent-shaped sweep of golden sand that defines the region’s mellow side. By default, this spot is a sanctuary of calm—its tucked-away orientation filters out most of the ocean’s energy, offering a gentle, forgiving canvas that beginners adore and anyone can enjoy. But don’t let the laid-back disposition fool you. When the winter swell finds its way in, the bay transforms: lefts and rights unfurl along the beach, delivering surprisingly fun, sometimes fast and hollow rides that reward a sharp eye for the shifting sandbars. The paddle-out is as easy as it gets, and that sandy bottom ensures a forgiving landing. In short, Meia Praia is a study in contrasts—a beginner’s haven that can secretly serve up a proper wave when conditions line up just right.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during the autumn and winter months, and Meia Praia feels the pulse of that power. From October through March, the average swell height climbs to 1.1m-1.4m, with long period waves (11-13s) carrying serious energy from distant storms. While the dominant swell direction is from the NW and WNW (which requires some refraction to wrap into the SSE-facing beach), the best days arrive when storms align to send groundswell from the S to WSW quadrant (the optimal swell window). Offshore winds from the N, NNW, NW, and WNW blow with consistency, especially during high-pressure setups, grooming the waves for clean, punchy conditions. The sweet spot often occurs with a positive NAO index steering a strong Azores High and a train of Atlantic lows, funnelling swell into the Portuguese coast. Expect frequent days with 1-1.5m 'fun' waves and occasional 1.5-2.5m 'pumping' sets when a deep low spins up southwest of Ireland. This is the time to score the best surf of the year at Meia Praia.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

April, May, and September serve as transitional months, offering a mix of declining winter energy and the first hints of summer. Swell heights average 0.8m-1.1m, with periods dipping to 9-11s, producing more 'average' and 'punchy' waves than the clean power of winter. The wind regime shifts – in April and May, northerly winds (N, NNW) still dominate, providing offshore conditions for a decent amount of the time (31-32% ideal wind). However, the swell direction becomes increasingly dominated by NW and WNW, which are less favourable for the spot. Still, when a late-season storm or a tropical system sends a south-southwest swell, Meia Praia can light up. September sees a spike in ideal wind percentages (38%) as the summer trade winds fade and autumn patterns begin, making it the best fair month – often small but clean.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

The summer months of June, July, and August are the low season for surf at Meia Praia. Average swell heights drop to a paltry 0.7-0.8m, with short periods of 8-9s, resulting in weak, 'choppy' and 'low' waves that rarely break with any force. The swell direction is overwhelmingly from the NW (61.5% in July), which is outside the optimal window and wraps in weakly. Although the prevailing winds are from the N, NNW, and NW (offshore directions), they often blow too strongly (20-40 kph) and create lumpy conditions even on small waves. Ideal wind percentage falls to 24-28%, meaning many days are either too small or too wind-affected. Unless you are a beginner looking for tiny, clean rollers on a longboard, the summer provides little to get excited about. Focus on morning glass-offs and hope for a rare south-westerly pulse.
